Family bike rides are pretty much my only form of exercise… We don’t go riding every day, but we do quite a bit.
Before I got pregnant with my oldest, me and Derrick would ride bikes all the time, like far far. This was when we lived in Arkansas… and there weren’t many sidewalks, but we didn’t have to worry about pulling a bike trailer, it was just us.
Fast forward to after I had my oldest… when he was old enough to sit in a trailer, we bought one and started taking him with us. Obviously, with one kid, you only need a single seat trailer, but then there came another munchkin. That turned into a search for a double seat bike trailer.
When using the bike trailer, me and Derrick get the exercise, while the boys get some fresh air.
Things we take on EVERY family bike ride
–SNACKS!!! If you plan on going for a lengthy ride…with kids, I’m tellin you, you need to pack snacks. If you want to enjoy your bike rides (or any outing for that matter), take snacks. It’s nothing worse than being on a bike ride and you are nowhere near being done and your kids are complaining that they’re hungry…or thirsty. A few snack choices:
- Raisins
- Apples – slices or cut into cubes
- Peanut butter and jelly sandwiches – Folded hot dog style.
- Peanut butter crackers
- Chips
- Cheez-its
I prefer to use a small container for the raisins because sandwich bags get really sticky.
–Kids mini backpack for their snacks. Sometimes i’ll put it in my bike basket, and sometimes they’ll hold their backpacks in the trailer with them.
–Water, of course. We were taking their own 360 degree cups, but they get warm way too fast, so I got a 24 oz insulated cup from Marshalls for $8. It came with a straw, but my youngest child is a back washer, so I took the straw out…so we can pour the water in our mouths or use the spout. All 4 of us just share 1 water bottle…we’ll probably end up getting another one. They are always thirsty. Update: We got the boys their own 14oz stainless steel water bottles with straws and they are great. 24 ounces just isn’t enough for 4 people on a bike ride, lol.
–Sunglasses – Just me really. I don’t like when it’s too bright, so I always bring my sunglasses. I will occasionally bring the boys sunglasses, but they always need help putting them on and we can’t stop every 30 seconds to help them put them back on cuz they want to keep takin them off.
–Hats for the boys
–Fanny pack or my purse
–Phone, wallet, keys
After they get done takin a ride in the bike trailer, there always ready to either take a walk or ride their own bikes.
