It’s “blowout & protective style season” in the natural hair community now that we’re stepping into the colder months. Since it’s prime time for blowing out your natural hair, this post is gonna be just that, while telling you how to avoid heat damage.
A lot of the things I’ve learned about natural hair are from Aeleise and Aishia of iAmBlackGirlCurls – IG / Black Girl Curls – FB / BlackCurlMagic.com / 30 Day Hair Detox.

What Blow Dryer am I Using?
Conair Silver Bird Hair Dryer and it is good! It gets HOTTTTT! Salon quality for sure. I got mine from Sally Beauty.
Steps to Safely Blow Out Your Natural Hair
• Start your wash process by using a clarifying shampoo, followed by a moisturizing shampoo, and then a quality conditioner. You DONT need to condition AND deep condition…it’s a waste of time, product and money.
-Any time you are going to be applying heat to the hair, you want to use a clarifying shampoo, which will give you a clean slate so that you will get the best results and you will not be burning products into your hair. 2 clarifying shampoos are Kinky-Curly Come Clean (says moisturizing, but it’s a clarifying shampoo) or Malibu C Un Do Goo.
-Using Shampoo and conditioner with silicones in them are best when heat styling because they leave a layer of protection on the hair when about to heat style.
•TIP – Don’t have your hair dripping wet or super dry; it should be damp.
• Apply a heat protectant serum or cream with silicones onto damp hair to each section of hair. Again, silicones leave behind a layer of protection for heat styling. Don’t use oil to blowout your hair…it will fry your hair.
• Detangle with a paddle brush or wide tooth comb.
• TIP – If you know you need your ends clipped or are in need of a haircut, do NOT use the blow-dryer comb attachment. Why you ask? The comb will get stuck in the tangles of your hair, resulting in the heat from the blow dryer staying in one place for far too long, causing heat damage because the comb is not able to easily pass through the tangles.
• Start with the tension method with medium sized sections. The tension method for blow drying is when you pull the hair taught and you use the blow dryer on its own or with the concentrator nozzle and go up and down the length of the hair with the heat from the blow dryer.
• After the hair is about 75% dry, I go in with a paddle brush or blow dry brush to finish drying my hair. You want to take the brush and blow-dryer down the length of the hair at the same time. This helps to smooth the strands even further.
• TIP -Blow drying the hair is not about how much heat you use, it’s about the tension, especially if you are not using the blow dryers comb attachment.
• Keep the heat moving at a consistent rate
• Continue this method until your entire head of hair is completely dry.
Until my next tutorial…
