Once my oldest figured out how to climb out of his pack n play… I came across the “floor bed” idea and immediately knew that’s what we would do. So I scoured Amazon looking for a toddler mattress and I came across the Milliard Crib Mattress. We could’ve gotten a regular, twin sized bed, but honestly, I don’t even think I thought about it at the time. I’d probably go that route to save money, plus they get more space, but I’m happy with our toddler mattress.
Floor Bed
A floor bed promotes your child’s freedom, by not confining them to a space. They are able to get up and lay back down when they want. At first we left his door open, but he would come in our room, EVERY night. One day I decided to close his door and it worked like a charm. No fussing, just quiet until he fell asleep. Some days you may hear him moving around in there, but then he’d fall asleep.
The floor bed idea is an extension of the Montessori learning structure…basically, everything a child needs should be at their level. Since it was his room, there was nothing in there that he “shouldn’t have.”
Some nights he’d roll around or want us to stay in there with him. Most of the time, Derrick would be the one to lay with him, because when I would do it, he would keep getting up and walking over me. It was just something about daddy being in the room. He might roll around and bother Derrick while he was supposed to be sleep, but he wouldn’t try to get up.
Once he woke up in the morning, we would hear him in his room playing and he would poop, like clockwork. When I opened his door, I knew I needed to hold my breath, lol.
Our family and friends weren’t and still aren’t thrilled about the idea of the floor bed, but we love it. My boys are 3 & 18 months now and have 2 twin sized floor beds. By not putting up bed frames yet, this gives them the freedom to sleep wild, jump on their beds with out us worrying about them falling off and hurting themselves or even hitting their heads or stubbing their toes on their bed frame. Sometimes they still end up hanging off their beds because of sleeping wild so I don’t have to worry about anything.

About the Milliard Crib Mattress
It came in a rectangular box, all rolled up. This mattress’ dimensions state that it fits in standard sized cribs and toddler beds. Measures: 52 x 27½ x 5.5 inches. The dimensions didn’t matter to us since it was going on the floor.
There was a strong smell, but a lot of products have a smell, so I sat it outside in the sun up against my house so it could air out. I may have done this for 2-3 days.
It comes encased in a washable, waterproof cover with a zipper. One side has little balls that are supposed to stop the mattress from sliding around on the floor. You ever get those fuzzy socks that have the little grips on the bottom? That’s what I’m talking about, except smaller.
Once you take the waterproof cover off, there is a breathable cover on the mattress. This toddler mattress features a firmer side for infants and a plush memory foam side for older babies and toddlers. Honestly, the difference is not even noticeable.
He had no issues when it came to sleeping on this. He slept…like a baby.

Don’t forget your sheets and mattress protector. I like the extra protection because if you get a good mattress protector, you won’t have to take the cover off that comes with the mattress when it’s time to wash.
Until my next post…
