Waxing yourself at home or having someone your close to you do your wax is a huge money saver and if you’re uncomfortable with someone else seeing your precious lady parts, waxing yourself is the way to go.
This post isn’t just about bikini waxing. It also works for legs, stomach, arms, underarms, etc…
I usually go to the European Wax Center to get my bikini line done with the butt strip, have my husband wax my armpits, and then I shave my legs and stomach. He’s done it a few times and with every wax, he gets better.
I think if you have someone who isn’t a professional doing your waxes, let them master one area first, such as the armpits. If you’re going to trust your best friend, spouse, or significant other to wax the more delicate areas, I’d suggest that you go get the initial wax done by a professional while they watch the process to get the gist of what to do and from that point on, they can maintain it. I trust Derrick, but if you look like a hairy beast down there and you want a complete amateur to wax you, more power to you, lol. Not me, no way, no how. Professionals get the job done fast.
I am officially obsessed with armpit and bikini waxes because they last so much longer and unlike with shaving, you won’t see the stubble / black “dots” of hair like you do even after a fresh shave. I am never shaving my pubic area again. I may shave the the bikini line from time to time, but never the full thing. I tried getting as much as I could one time before; big mistake, and o.m.g I was itching like crazy until it grew back. I had to walk weird occasionally because you obviously don’t want to scratch out in public so you gotta figure something out, lol.
The only thing with waxing yourself is getting certain areas is tricky, especially if you’re going to do the butt strip on yourself and you have to be somewhat flexible or figure out some comfortable way to lay down and use a standing mirror… maybe even one that tilts, like a vanity mirror. The best position might be for you to lay on your back with your legs bent in a butterfly position with the bottoms of your feet touching. I sit on the toilet when I do mine, lol, but I also only do my bikini line, not the full brazilian.
Equipment you’ll need:
Wax – preferably hard wax – stripless wax.
Wax warmer
Wax warmer collars – keeps the wax from getting all over the warmer
Empty Wax Can – IF you’re going to be using wax beans instead of the wax that already comes in a can.
Popsicle sticks
Oil
Powder
Ingrown hair serum

DIY Waxing : Use Hard Wax
Hard Wax is just way easier to work with. I have tried both and I’d definitely go with the hard wax. The only bad thing with hard wax is if you take forever to take it off or make the layer too thin, it will break and crack as you’re pulling it off, which you don’t want. It should come off in one piece. It may leave tiny pieces behind, but you don’t want huge chunks that you have to keep pulling off one at a time…that just makes it more painful, lol.
Some wax kits come with wax already, but when it’s time for a replacement, here are a few options
Gigi Brazilian Hard Body Wax
Satin Smooth Hard Wax
Hard Wax Beans
• Be sure to read what the wax is best used for… for instance, some is for thin/fine facial hair while others are better suited for coarse hair.
Empty Wax Can
If you decide to go the wax beans route, the empty wax can will protect your wax warmer. It’s like using a can of wax except you’ll pour the wax beans in the empty wax can instead of directly into your warmer. That way if you decide to try a pre-canned wax there won’t be any problems cleaning / transitioning from the wax beans.
*Check the empty wax can dimensions*
Empty wax can
Says it fits most wax warmers ( 1 pack )
( 3 pack) – Great if you have multiple types of wax beads or are testing multiple brands.
Wax warmer
How else are you gonna melt your wax? There are a ton of options to choose from, but I use the Gigi wax warmer on low.
Gigi Brazilian Hard Waxing Kit
Comes with HARD WAX, pre epilation oil, post wax cooling gel, DVD, and popsicle sticks . This is the kit I have.
Gigi Waxing Kit
Comes with SOFT WAX, muslin wax strips, 2 pre-wax treatments, 2 post-wax treatments, and popsicle sticks.
Gigi Wax Warmer
Just the warmer
Melisa wax warmer kit
comes with a guide, 4 different wax for different areas, 10 large applicators, and 10 small applicators.
Wax Warmer Collars
You put a wax warmer collar around the top / neck of the wax can before placing it into the warmer so that when you are using your popsicle sticks to take the wax out of the wax warmer, the excess doesn’t get all over the wax warmer, but the collar will catch it, keeping your warmer nice and clean.
FantaSea Standard Wax Warmer Collars ( 50 pack ) – you’ll have these forever, unless you do this professionally
Beauticom Wax Warmer Collars ( 50 pack ) – you’ll have these forever, unless you do this professionally
Popsicle sticks
Popsicle sticks are definitely a must for waxing… idk what you’d use without them. You can break them in half so you don’t have to double dip or so that you’re able to use both sides of the stick, which may or may not work, lol. You need enough stick to use as the handle for applying your wax.
•Apply wax in the direction of hair growth
Popsicle sticks / tongue depressors – 500 count
Oil
Not completely necessary, but you don’t want the wax to get stuck to dry skin and be super hard to rip off. So use a tiny amount and rub it in. If you used too much, just take a tissue and wipe off the excess.
You can really use any oil.
Powder
Shhhhhhhh… the only powder I have lying around my house is my RCMA makeup powder. Use a little bit of powder after applying the oil to absorb excess moisture. You can just use powder and skip the oil if you want to. The powder is also useful if you get sweaty during the process because that will make the wax harder to rip off, yikes!
Cornstarch
Baby powder
Makeup powder, lol
Ingrown hair serum
I don’t use any, but I have heard good things about the European Wax Center’s Smooth Me Ingrown Hair Serum and the Smooth Me Ingrown Hair Wipes.
