Basketball Belly
When it comes to basketball, my husband is obsessed. I mean, his love for the game is real. He might choose basketball over me… just kidding! He would never!
We didn’t take “formal” maternity pictures, but I decided to get my belly painted like a basketball because I knew my husband would love it. The plan was to take formal and fun maternity pictures, but it just didn’t work out that way.
I found two pictures on Pinterest that I used as inspiration. One gave us the idea to use a Nike headband, which I hadn’t even thought about since it’s pretty old school, and the other, I liked how thick the lines were on the basketball and the shade of orange she chose.
There are Facebook groups for everything, and I am a part of the mil spouse page in my area. Of course I posted on there asking if someone could paint my belly along with how I wanted it, and a lady responded. Because I didn’t know her, I wasn’t gonna go to her house alone, so Derrick went with me and that was the first time I met her. Ever since then we have been friends. Crazy, right?
She had the primary colors and we tried mixing them to get the perfect shade, but it just wasn’t happening. After 30-45 minutes of mixing different amounts of each of the primary colors, I decided it’d be best if I just went and bought the shade that I liked. Of the 3 color options I picked out, I had Derrick make the final decision. It was the perfect shade of brown. We used Apple Barrel 20511E Brown Oxide – Matte Acrylic Paint. She did such a great job and it was so neat. It was exactly what I wanted.
In between layers, I took short breaks from standing. You have to be careful when you sit down, because your belly will wrinkle. Be sure to sink down in your seat a little bit, because you don’t want the paint to start separating or peeling before you even get the chance to take your pictures.
After she was done, we went right from her house to an outside basketball court.
When we pulled up to the basketball court, it was empty, but as we started grabbing the camera equipment, we saw a group of kids heading towards the court. I told Derrick to hurry up and beat them so we could at least get half the court and that’s exactly what ended up happening. Derrick set up the shot and we used the camera remote for some pictures and the timer for others. Since we were sharing the court, we had to keep an eye on their basketball so it didn’t hit the camera equipment.
I barely know anything about basketball, so I kept asking Derrick what some good basketball moves or positions were that we could use for poses. Even though I kept asking him, hoping he wouldn’t forget a pose he really wanted to do, he still forgot one of the best ones, but that’s alright.
We got a lot of great pictures!
Tips
*TIP 1 – Before you paint your belly, I would advise shaving your stomach…getting rid of all coarse hair and peach fuzz.
*TIP 2 – I’m not sure how this would affect your septic system if you were to just get in the shower and rinse and rub the paint off, but I just pulled it off in strips. Once you pick at the paint, a little lip will form and you will be able to pull it off easily. The perimeter of where the basketball was painted was a little irritated and red.
Here are a bunch of pictures from our pregnant basketball belly photo shoot.
Thanks, Jennae!
